At
the turn of the century, several affluent families from Portland
built large, shingle-style summer houses on the Pacific Ocean at
Gearhart, Oregon. The line of over a dozen homes has a magnificent
presence at the edge of the dense sea grass at the crest of the
beach. This house has been owned by the family since the 1940's
and has served as their ocean retreat for four generations. Today,
the house is shared between the matriarchal grandmother and her
four children's young families. The design challenge was to adapt
the historic house for new lifestyles and to accommodates year-round
use. The design required reorganizing the main floor plan to formalize
the living spaces. A garage structure was attached to the main house
and designed to accommodate a large children's play area and a loft
guest bedroom and bath.
